Massage for the Cancer Client:
In recognition of the evolving and growing public interest in complementary therapies, the last ten years has seen numerous studies designed and undertaken to evaluate Oncology massage.
The findings of these studies are typified in the position now taken by Oncologists at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Centres Integrative Medicine Program in New York (arguably the most pre-eminent Cancer Research hospital in the world -www.mskcc.org).
At MS-K Oncologists and other health professionals encourage cancer patients to walk and engage in gentle exercise regimens. This brings desirable results, such as stimulating blood flow and increasing physical strength. For decades there has been a myth among massage therapists that massage should not be used with cancer patients. It is time we put this myth to rest and offer patients this most desired and comforting of complementary therapies.
Massage is an effective and highly appreciated therapy for cancer patients and their families. Scientific studies show that cancer patients receiving massage have lower anxiety scores than those receiving no massage therapy. Although patients say the release of muscle tension sometimes leads to pain relief and enhanced energy, feelings of deep relaxation, calm, and wholeness are most commonly reported. Massage therapy is exactly what the cancer patient needs!
In Ireland alone, the Department of Health has funded three full time clinical research nurses to carry out research. The Irish Cancer Society endorses complementary therapies including gentle massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, acupuncture, hypnotherapy, visualisation, relaxation, creative-arts therapies and music therapy, stating "Many patients that are stressed either physically or emotionally because of their illness find real benefit from these therapies and develop an increased sense of well-being and an increased perception of their quality of life".
*Note: This type of massage is extremely gentle. However your Oncologist's or GP's permission is sought before treatment begins. Because the skin is very often compromised during chemotherapy or radiotherapy treatments, the oil medium used in this type of massage is a hypoallergenic formulation that is free of chemical.
