About Swedish Massage

Modern massage (including some sports massage strokes) is based on Swedish Massage techniques developed by Per Henrik Ling (1776-1839). A physiologist from Sweden, Per Henrik studied in china and devised a system of movements which he found helpful for improving his health and maintaining his physical condition.  These movements are know as the 'Ling' system and include techniques known as passive and active. His work was recognised first in his home country.  In 1813 the Swedish government established "The Royal Swedish Central Institute of Gymnastics" of which Ling was the president - and subsequently around the world. In 1838 the Swedish Institute opened in London and there are similar institutes around the world.

Many systems and methods of massage exist but Swedish massage remains the basis for most practice.  It can be used alone or in combination with other treatments and is a central part of therapies such as physiotheray, stress-management and aromatherapy.

Swedish Massage is beneficial to all body systems and is a natural and effective way to treat both physical conditions and psychological problems.  It is a more energising treatment than aromatherapy massage as it involves deeper pressure of the body tissues.  However this treatment is just as enjoyable and as deeply relaxing.  Essential oils can also be used in this treatment to benefit the body further.
